8/8/2020 Update:

  • Confusion ensues over the PS5’s backward compatibility
  • They had previously stated that “more than 4000 games published on PS4” should hopefully all be playable on the newly released PS5
  • However, more recent speculation suggests that only games specifically white-listed are available for launch compatibility
  • This is speculated to include around the top 100 PS4 titles. This is speculation, but it's coming from some reliable sources.

8/6/2020 Update:

  • French reseller Carrefour recently listed pricing for the PS5 on their website, which turned out to be false
  • It displayed the two versions of the console, one with a 4K Blu-ray disc drive and one without, costing €499 and €399 (that’s $589 and $470 for us Americans)

8/5/2020 Update:

  • Photos of what appears to be an all-black DualSense controller have been leaked on Twitter.
  • While the source doesn’t look very reliable as it’s a new Twitter account, there is the possibility that they are early prototypes of an all-black variant of the DualSense
  • Sony has made it clear we shouldn’t expect a black version at launch, so this one will have to be a waiting game.

8/3/2020 Update:

  • Sony revealed the future of PS4 peripherals on the new console
  • Most of this is good news, with all officially licensed (1st or 3rd party) confirmed to be compatible with the PS5
  • This includes: racing wheels, arcade sticks, flight sticks, wireless/official third-party headsets, PS Move Motion Controllers, the VR Aim Controller, and the PlayStation camera
  • Though this is not the case for The Dualshock 4
  • It will work with PS4 games played on the PS5, but they state that it will not work with PS5-only titles as they believe PS5 games should take advantage of the unique features of the DualSense

7/28/2020 Update:

  • Leaked images from a Chinese factory show off what appears to be detachable faceplates—the white wrapped casing—for the PS5
  • This suggests owners may be able to purchase custom/limited edition faceplates for the PS5 without needing to buy a new console, as with previous generations

  • Sony gave us a sneak peak at PS5 box art
  • They look very similar to what we’re used to, but they doubled-down on the black on white aesthetic matching that of the console, with the top strip changing to predominantly white.

7/1/2020 Update:

  • Alongside Sony’s announcement of “PlayStation Indies”, a new endeavor to support indie developers
  • Shuhei Yoshida announced a handful of new indie games for the PS5
  • Most are on both on the PS4 and 5 (Recompile was the only PS5 exclusive)
  • This support for indie developers suggests we may see even more indies on next-gen consoles.

  • Sony held their PS5 Reveal Event and it blew us all away. They showed off the latest PS5 design which looks sleek and modern, but slightly like a WiFi router. It features a dual charging port, an HD camera, 3D audio headphones, and a media remote. It comes in two versions, a regular disc version and a digital version. See our take here.
  • During this event, they announced some of the upcoming games for PS5 and they're pretty exciting to say the least. They announced 26 new games including: Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Gran Turismo 7, Godfall, Horizon, Resident Evil 8, GTA V, NBA 2K21, Hitman 3, and Demon's Souls.

  • Sony filed a patent for a wireless charging adapter for the DualSense controller for use with inductive charging pads. The controller also has a USB-C port for wired charging. The patent reveals the presence of 'X' and 'O' buttons on the back of the controller, a first for Playstation

  • Epic Games revealed their Unreal Engine 5, demoing the incredibly realistic graphics on a PS5. It will be used for PS5 and Xbox Series X in 2021

3/31/2020 Update:

Canadian retailer Play N Trade Vancouver Island has begun to take PS5 pre-orders. In a post on its Facebook page, the retailer said that the console will be priced at CA$559 or US$388. Play N Trade also says that the PS5 will be available in the final quarter of 2020, which is what Sony has officially announced about the PS5 release date.

  • PS5 Drop: Tune in today at 12 pm eastern time to hear from Sony about the PS5!
PS5 lead system architect Mark Cerny will provide a deep dive into PS5’s system architecture, and how it will shape the future of games.

3/09/2020 Update:

  • PS5 Graphics will be Jaw-Dropping: In an interview with Luca Dalco of LKA, the developer behind the Town of Light. He expressed his excitement for this upcoming feature with the statement below.
It’s one of the most important advances in visual capacity that we were waiting for,” he said. “We worked a lot in order to use the highest-resolution textures as possible also on PS4; nonetheless, PS5 will allow us to use an incredible Texel density, up to 4096px/m — that means the visual will be fully detailed also in higher resolutions

3/06/2020 Update:

The PS5, PS5 Pro and both versions of the new Xbox will all be released around the same time, and guesses that the higher-end models will cost upwards of $600.

3/05/2020 Update:

  • PS5 Pro: According to a noted Japanese games journalist Zenji Nishikawa we can expect Sony to release a more powerful PS5 Pro alongside a “standard” PS5 model. Check out the post yourself from the gaming forum NeoGAF:

“Alright people. One last time.. I heard that there are 2 consoles per company. The mid-gen refreshes are going to be introduced at release so that these consoles can run the entire 7yr cycle.

XSX that was released yesterday is the top end one. 12TFLOPS. There will be a base Xbox Series X that is slower than that one. Sony is releasing 2 PS models. The base PS5 is 9TFLOPs. Their other one is also top of the line to compete with XSX top dog.

This all makes sense now as to why people are getting mixed numbers for each of the platforms. I also heard that the top of the line models will be expensive. No pricing but I would guess around $600.

Also no dates on when the top models will come out for PS5. My guess is that they are going to release both models at the same time. This is ALL I know and won’t be fishing for anymore info.”

  • Wireless Charging for the DualShock 5: As we wait for more PS5 news from Sony the specs of the new controller keep on coming. Another cool feature that will be added is wireless charging.
The patent, which was found by Saqib Mansoor of the SegmentNext website, is called “Wireless charging adapter with game control keys for computer game controller,” and seems to show a “wireless charging adapter that can snap onto a computer game controller and can be inductively coupled to a charging base to wirelessly recharge a battery in the controller.”

  • Who needs a FitBit?: Sony plans on integrating biofeedback tech with the DualShock 5 to give players a whole new gaming experience! Feel free to check out the patent here.
Another PS5 patent has surfaced, seemingly confirming that Sony’s next-gen controller, the DualShock 5, can use biofeedback technology to monitor a user’s heart rate and sweat secretion levels, and adjust gameplay accordingly

2/19/2020 Update:

  • Latest PS5 Leaks are: When the PS4 came out at $399 the console cost $381 dollars to build. Now with the PS5, the rumors have the manufacturing cost around $450 that could lead to a $500 dollar launch price. As the prices of console rise, along with the popularity of the cheaper option of mobile gaming, could we be seeing the last of the multi-decade dominance of the PlayStation and Xbox?

2/17/2020 Update:

  • The PS5 could be Sony’s Last Console: When the PS4 came out at $399 the console cost $381 dollars to build. Now with the PS5, the rumors have the manufacturing cost around $450 that could lead to a $500 dollar launch price. As the prices of console rise, along with the popularity of the cheaper option of mobile gaming, could we be seeing the last of the multi-decade dominance of the PlayStation and Xbox?
That could be a bummer for Sony and very well mark the end of the PlayStation console line. The reason I’m saying this is because the gaming market is evolving beyond consoles and a potential price hike from Sony could end up killing the PS5.

  • Sony trying to lower PS5 Price Point: We are expecting an official announcement from Sony any day now for the price of the upcoming PS5, but this delay is because Sony is trying to prevent a mounting price point. Due to the component parts rising, and production slated to start in the Spring. Sony has to think fast to get the price point ideally in the $400 range like the PS4 release.
Scarce components have pushed the manufacturing costs for Sony Corp.’s next PlayStation to around $450 per unit, forcing a difficult price-setting decision in its battle with Microsoft Corp., according to people with knowledge of the matter.

2/07/2020 Update:

  • Coronavirus could delay launch: With Nintendo CEO Shuntaro Furukawa saying last week that production of the console will be impacted, while Apple products like the iPhone and AirPods are seeing the effects as well. We should be prepared for a delay in the launch of the PS5. Here is a note from the Jefferies Group to investors:
The video game sector is currently manufacturing, or beginning to, a once-in-several-years’ product generation change for the 2020 holiday season. If [company] shutdowns exceed a month or so, game schedules will be delayed. New consoles may likewise suffer supply issues from a prolonged disruption, ahead of their Fall 2020 planned launches.

Here is the summary of the leaks:

A new image of what is allegedly the final version of the PlayStation 5’s user interface has been shared online. The picture itself isn’t particularly revealing, but it is in line with what could be expected from a PlayStation console UI. Rumors from another source claim the PS5 could come with a 2 TB SSD

  • Top EA executives are getting a little bit excited!: Most of our favorite sports games like FIFA and Madden are developed by EA. This is great news for sports gaming enthusiasts who are thinking about upgrading their console. Here are official statements from EA employees.
The power of the new consoles is gonna be substantially greater than existing consoles said EA CFO, Blake Jorgensen.
We can do a lot more [with PS5 and Xbox Series X]. Things we’re doing will blow people’s minds.

1/27/2020 Update:

  • Is the PS Vita the Switch of Sony?: Most of the leaks and rumors around the PS5 has been centered around advancements with integrating the console with aspects that have been lacking in gaming. The controllers will have touch vibrations based on the experiences in a game instead of the now accustomed double vibration for all in-game scenarios. Now there is speculation about the community aspect of gaming with implementations around notifications for when friends buy games.
  • Have Graphics Peaked?: No one wants to hear that these new consoles won’t be better than the last, but that could be the case with the graphics. Here is what one developer had to say:
While we’re sure to get a whole bunch of new games, a developer has warned to expect less of an update to the graphics. As we approach photo-realism, it seems more and more likely that consoles are going to hit a graphical brick wall.

  • Potential Designs: With all the new leaks and still weeks from an official announcement from Sony. Let’s check out these concept designs that are based on the 4channel leaks or fan-made.
  • New Slogan?: Has Sony really changed their slogan from For the Players to Time to play? It looks that way with their new Playstation Now ad.

1/17/2020 Update:

  • More Buttons = More Fun: We finally have an official image of the new PS5 controller instead of rough patent sketches. According to Sony, these new features will lend to a more immersive gaming experience. Don’t worry if you aren’t planning on getting the PS5 this controller can be used with the PS4.

1/14/2020 Update:

  • A Halloween Surprise: We can expect the release of the PS5 in October 2020 with a $499 price tag. Sony is expected to release more info on February 5th.
  • We know the tech: “With the GPU improvements and AMD’s improved chip architecture, a vastly more powerful CPU, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, variable-rate shading, faster memory, and a fast solid-state drive, the next-gen consoles are shaping up to be a great leap beyond their current counterparts.”
  • These leaks are not helpful: The dev kit has been leaked, but we are only getting fan art for the potential PS5 design nothing from Sony.

  • PS5 = Xbox Series X: Analysts predict the launch price of the PS5 will be more expensive than the PS4, and will likely match the Xbox Series X.

What is confirmed:

  • Release date: The PS5 is confirmed for the holiday season for 2020, but some blogs are confident with a November release date. Specifically the 12th of November. Yet according to TechRadar claims through a leak the release date would be November 20th.
  • New tech: Directly from the CEO we know that we will see new tech with the controllers. Both these changes are related to the feedback you receive from the controller from vibrations even to the touch of the game’s surroundings.
We are adopting haptic feedback to replace the “rumble” technology found in controllers since the 5th generation of consoles. With haptics, you truly feel a broader range of feedback, so crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field
You can even get a sense for a variety of textures when running through fields of grass or plodding through mud. Source
  • Hardware: Sony has already promised to include state of the art hardware like an SSD. This will significantly improve the speed at which the system can render objects in the world, as well as cut loading times in general.
Cerny demonstrated this by using the fast travel feature in Marvel’s Spider-Man on a PS4. From start to finish, this process took 15 seconds. He performed the same thing on a PS5 devkit, and it took less than a second.

Additional hardware improvements such as AMD Ryzen Line chip along with eight cores of the new 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture. Source

Rumors and speculation:

Price: The PS5 will cost $600. Quickscope rated this False.

  • Famitsu contacted the company and received confirmation the PS5 will not cost $600. Since the PS3 was initially set to $600 and flopped in sales compared to the Xbox 360. The expectation is the console would lie somewhere between $400 and $500. Source; express.co.uk

The controller design: The recent images are the future design for the PS5. Quickscope rated this False.

  • Nothing official has been released from Sony about the new controller design. By looking at the patent submitted by Sony the design looks quite similar to the current controller model, but when you dive deeper Sony clearly states “shared controls and passing controls in an interactive application such as a video game”. We are confident when there is controller news it will be game-changing, and will not just be a leaked design image.
